In Eastern Sioux dialect, Winona means "first born child" (If the child is a girl). A Sioux village by the name of Winona once stood on the present site of Winona, Minnesota. The name is used in the legend of a Sioux maiden who committed suicide rather than agree to an arranged marriage.
The street also may have been named for Winona Tister, the daughter of a North Side real estate developer in the 1860s.
