West Side Hospital

From HistoryWiki

West Side Hospital of Chicago was founded in 1896 at 819-823 W. Harrison Street (later the streets were renumbered and it became 1850 W. Harrison Street). The hospital was closed for health violations and went bankrupt in 1939.

On March 13, 1939, Federal Judge William H. Holly ordered Fred E. Hummel, trustee of the West Side Hospital, to negotiate for a private sale instead of a sale by auction, which previously had been considered. The hospital sought reorganization under section 77-B of the federal bankruptcy act soon after the health department ordered it closed last spring (1938). Hummel reported that the hospital operated on a $2,000 monthly deficit after being reopened during the summer.

A month later, in the April 20, 1939, issue of the Chicago Tribune, it was reported that the building was purchased by Cook County and added to Cook County Hospital, 1835 W. Harrison Street.
