Smith, Perry H., Jr.
Perry H. Smith, Jr. and Emma A. Smith were the parents of Dunlap Smith.
Perry H. Smith, Jr. was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. His parents removed to Chicago when he was but five years old, and his education was commenced in the Ogden School. When only eight years of age he entered Racine College, where he remained for three years and afterward traveled abroad, visiting France and Germany, and the Paris Exposition.
He returned in 1867, and after spending two years in the Charlier Institute, he again went abroad and devoted himself for a time to travel and study on the continent. At the end of two years he returned and entered the sophomore class at Hamilton College, N.Y., where he was graduated in 1874.
After a third trip to Europe he entered the Columbia College Law School in New York City, graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), and was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the state of New York.
He then came back to Chicago and entered the office of John N. Jewett, and some time afterward became associated with Francis H. Kales in the practice of his profession. Mr. Smith was the democratic candidate for congress from the third district in the Hancock campaign, and carried the city precincts by a one thousand vote majority.
