Cook County, Illinois Biographies (http://www.onlinebiographies.info/il/cook/smith-d.htm)

Dunlap Smith - Born in Chicago in 1863. Son of Perry H. Smith, Jr. and Emma A. Smith, both Americans by birth and descent. His father was one of the best known and influential of Chicago's early citizens, and was for eighteen years vice president of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company, during which time he did much to aid in the development of the city.

Dunlap Smith graduated from Harvard University in 1884, and during his college days his ability, industry and excellent scholarship gained him honorable mention at graduation and the position of secretary of the Harvard Philosophical Society.

Upon his return to Chicago he engaged in the real estate business, and is now the head of the firm of Dunlap Smith & Company, which does a large mortgage banking business in addition to the handling of real estate.

Dunlap Smith is a director of the Chicago Elevator Company, the Wilmington & Vermillion Coal Company, and has been a most active member of the Chicago Real Estate Board since its organization.

Having been reared in Chicago, and having early turned his attention to real estate, Mr. Smith is considered an expert on realty valuation. He is an active and influential member of the Chicago Club, Union Club, University Club, Chicago Athletic Club, and North Shore Country Club, and is quite as well known in the social life of the city as he is in business circles.

His name was originally William Dunlap Smith, but when he entered business the fact that there were so many of the same name he found was a decided disadvantage and by decree of court in 1886, he changed it to Dunlap Smith, dropping the first name. It may fairly be said that no name in Chicago is better known than the one which has existed so few years.

He was married Wednesday, October 12, 1887, to Harriet Dean Smith, nee: Harriet Dean Flower, and has three boys, Perry Smith, Lawrence Smith, and Elliott Dunlap Smith.
