Memories of Marty Schmidt (Sunday, May 15, 1921-Sunday, May 17, 2009)

Published in the July 2009 issue of The Historian, pp. 10-14

Martin J. Schmidt, one of our founders, passed away on Sunday, May 17, at the age of 88. Shortly thereafter, Kate Sosin, daughter of Sue Sosin, wrote about Marty’s life for Lorraine Swanson’s new on-line Lake-Effect News] [1].

Marty’s contributions to history as a WWII Army Photographer helped to bring the war home to millions who saw his photos. His contributions to his West Ridge roots, in part by helping found our Society, lives on in this, the Society he loved.

To honor his passing, I felt that we could best remember Marty’s great photographic talent by publishing a sampling of his thousands of photographs and selected reminiscences by those who knew him best.

This is his true legacy. It’s how Marty saw us.

—Hank Morris, Director of Publications
