Samuel J. Walker

Ashland Avenue was named by one of two men. Some claim that Ashland Avenue was named by Samuel J. Walker (1827-1884), a Kentucky native who, around 1864, developed the land in the vicinity of Ashland Avenue and Harrison Street and named the street after the Kentucky estate of Henry Clay (1777-1852), which was surrounded by ash trees.
