Named for John Foster Rhodes, a real estate speculator and developer from Ohio. Rhodes was also a Chicago lawyer and builder in the 1870s and 1880s. He specialized in the construction of fireproof buildings, which were much in demand after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1874, he developed the Rhodes Subdivision, a section of land near Rhodes Avenue and 31st Street.
