Ravenswood Avenue

The men who developed the community of Ravenswood were standing in a field in 1868 near what is now Leland Avenue and Clark Street, examining their property as the sun sank in the sky. A flock of ravens flew out of the woods, so the story goes, and one of the men exclaimed, “That’s it! Ravenswood!”
Another possibility is that the street was named after Ravenswood, West Virginia, the hometown of one member of the Ravenswood Land Company.
Others say that the woods in this area were the home of Chief Raven, a Potawatomi Indian leader who lived in the woods along the Chicago River.
Also, some say that two settlers, a Mr. Ravens and a Mr. Woods, were the source of the name.
The original name was Ravenswood Park.
