Engine Company No. 70 Edgewater

6030 N. Clark Street

As of Friday September 26th 2008 Truck 47 and Engine 59 as well as Engine 70, Battalion 9 and Ambulance 13 are in the process of moving into their new fire station at 6030 N. Clark Street. Truck 47 had moved in first with Engine 70's station in the process of moving with the help of a van from the Support and Logistics division according to a reliable witness.

On Saturday August 16 the city held and "Open House" for the public to see the new fire station which had featured speeches from Mayor Daley and Commissioner Brooks and other officials however the station wasn't being used as a fire station until today. Engine 59 is supposed to also be in the station along with Engine 70 and Truck 47 (for the time being).

The Chicago Fire Department has a tradition of taking Engines out of service when more then one single Engine stations are consolidated and as of the last few years Engines 100,77 and 61 were all taken out of service when new fire stations were opened in their districts.

It is unknown how long Engine 59 will remain in service however the speculation had been over the last several years that they would be replaced by a new Truck company on the south side (most likely at Engine 88 or Engine 116's quarters but it is unknown that will actually happen or not.

As most of you already know Engine 100 was replaced by Truck 6 which had been out of service since 1963 while Engine 77 was replaced by Haz Mat 2 (512) and Engine 61 was replaced by Truck 12 which had been out of service since January of 1992.

Even Chicago fire stations that have actually run with two Engines assigned to them don't last more then a few years until one of the Engines get taken out of service or is relocated. During the last 40 years or less Engine 104 had temporarily shared quarters with Engine 1, Engine 25 had shared quarters with Engine 5, Engine 67 had shared quarters with Engine 117, Engine 85 had shared quarters with Engine 44, Engine 51 had shared quarters with Engine 43 and for a short while with Engine 47, Engine 24 had shared quarters with Engine 57 and for a short while with Engine 26.

The fire house in the 9th Battalion is known as the 'Full House' since it is home to Engine 59, Engine 70, Truck 47, Ambulance 13 and Battalion 9. Located at 6030 N. Clark Street, it has no hose tower and a much smaller footprint on the 'front' end when compared to Engine 18's house.

Engine 99 had shared quarters with Engine 109 when 99's station was being rebuilt due to fire damage and Engine 79 had shared quarters with Engine 83. Engine 12 had shared quarters with Engine 107 and with Engine 95 for a short period of time and Engine 66 had shared quarters with Engine 44 and with Engine 18 for a short period of time.Engine 16 had shared quarters with Engine 48 until Engine 48 house officially became Engine 16's house and Engine 48 was taken out of service and Engine 27 had shared quarters with Engine 4 for a few years.Engine 21 and 1 also used to share quarters.

There are other instances of Engine companies sharing quarters before 1960 and also in instances when repairs were being made to fire stations and when new fire stations were being built. An example of that is when Engine 124 had shared quarters with Engine 89 for close to a year when Engine 124's new (at the time) station was being built in 1964/65.
