The Newberry Theater opened in 1914 and had seating for 700. The theater was located on Clark Street at Chestnut Street. It was named for its location not far from the famed Newberry Library.

The Newberry became a porn theater in the early 1970s (first straight for a short time, then gay) until the theater closed around 1977. It was afterward torn down and replaced by a parking lot which is still there today.
