History

McCormick Theological Seminary was founded in 1829 in Hanover, Indiana, as the theological department of Hanover College. In 1840 it moved to New Albany, Indiana and then to Chicago in 1859.

Cyrus McCormick, the famed inventor of the reaper was responsible for the seminary moving to Chicago. He offered to endow four professorships for $25,000 each if the school would relocate in or near Chicago.

Since 1975, the seminary has been located at 5555 S. Woodlawn Avenue in Hyde Park.
