Mark & Valerie Traverso House

From HistoryWiki

Mark and Valerie Traverso owned the house at 6723 N. Greenview Avenue in 2002.

This house was described in the 2002 Fall House Tour Booklet.

This multi-gabled Queen Anne-style house is one of the few left in the Rogers Park neighborhood with its facade almost fully intact. At the turn of the 20th Century, the area would have been filled with homes like this, painted colorfully and highly embellished. Unfortunately, many homes have lost their intricate carving and shingle work due to changing tastes, so it is particularly special to view an intact example. The beautiful details of the facade and the second story's large support brackets with a sunburst design are a treat to the eye.

The inside of the home contains the classic Victorian first floor layout--double parlors, dining room, kitchen, and a large open staircase. All of the staircase elements are original, including the delicate, floriated newel posts, turned spindles, and wainscoting. While the fireplace in the north parlor corner is not original, the location is. Substantial oak moldings can be found throughout the house, refinished to their original golden color.

The back of the house has changed dramatically, with new French doors in the dining room that lead to a back yard deck, as well as a recently expanded kitchen. Remodeling has also taken place on the second floor, where you will find three large bedrooms and two baths. An office adjoining the master bedroom has had its ceiling height raised to a dramatic 16 feet. A new master bath, a walk-in closet and dressing room were added at the same time.
