Lake Shore Drive was named by Potter Palmer whose mansion at Schiller Street overlooked the Drive and Lake Michigan. It wasn't until 1946 that the entire length of the shoreline road was called Lake Shore Drive. Prior to that the South Side stretch was called Leif Ericson Drive and the downtown stretch was called Field Boulevard.
