The Lake Michigan Water Trail Association was formed in January of 2010 as a follow up to the wildly successful 2009 Burnham to Marquette Water Trail Expedition. It became apparent that one organization alone could not create a single water trail that crossed so many political and geographic borders.

Life-long Illinois paddler Gary Mechanic had the foresight to see that creating the water trail would require the combined skills, efforts, and resources of the many stakeholders around the lake. Gary gathered together representatives from the major paddling clubs in the four states surrounding Lake Michigan to plant the seed to grow the Water Trail into a world class paddling destination. The seed has sprouted and taken root with the Lake Michigan Water Trail Association and promises to grow into a world class organization.
