Keenan, John Francis

Former Chicago 49th Ward Alderman, John Francis Keenan (1894-1984) was commonly known as "Frank Keenan".

Keenan was born in Lehi, Utah on July 23, 1894. He studied at the San Francisco Academy of Fine Arts and became a political cartoonist in San Francisco, California; and in Sheridan and Casper Wyoming. He died as a painter of watercolors and and acrylics at an artists colony in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he had moved in 1965.

Keenan came to Chicago in 1923 and went to work for the city's health department where he illustrated children's health care books written by health commissioner, Herman Bundesen.

Keenan lived in Rogers Park.

He served as alderman from 1934-1950.

His brothers were James Keenan and Mark Keenan, and his sons were George Keenan and Edward Keenan.
