Alexander N. Fullerton (1804-1880) was an Attorney, real estate investor, and lumber merchant. He lived the comfortable life of a man born to wealth. Alexander's father was a bank president in Chester, Vermont, and the young Fullerton attended the exclusive Middlebury College in Connecticut. He graduated from Litchfield Law School in Litchfield, Connecticut, he came to Chicago in 1833 and began a law practice with Grant Goodrich. He invested in local real estate, and while the city boomed, he stockpiled his riches. He also opened a lumber yard in 1838 on North Water Street.

Fullerton traveled a great deal to France, Italy, and Germany and was active in Whig Party and then Republican politics.
