Illinois State Temperance Convention

The meeting of the Friends of Temperance in Illinois Society, as a General State Convention, responsive to a call signed by Reverend A.J. Joslyn, Chairman of the State Temperance Alliance, R.M. Guilford, G.W.C.T. of G.L. of Good Templars, and H.G. Fitzhugh, G.W.P. of the Sons of Temperance of the State.

R.M. Guilford called the meeting to order, and prayers were offered by Reverend Mr. W.S. Pope of Mt. Morris.

Reverend Mr. Stoughton, being chairman, pro tem, Messers. Bowen of Chicago, Reverend Mr. Archibald Kenyon of Chicago, and Reverend Mr. W.S. Pope of Mt. Morris, were appointed a Committee on Permanent Organization, who reported as follows:

W.H. Brown Esquire, Chicago, President.

Messers. Stoughton of Freeport, J.W. Waughop of Chicago, Jewett of Ottawa, R.M. Guilford of Chicago, Bragdon of Evanston, R.A. Law and L.S. Bond of Chicago, Vice Presidents.

A business committee of nine was constituted by the appointment of Reverend Archibald Kenyon of Putnam County, R.M. Guilford, Cook County, L.W. Fisher, Stephenson County, Philo Carpenter, Cook County, Parker Earle, Grundy County, J.W. Waughop, Cook County, W.S. Pope,A.G. Warren, William J. Peterson, Cook County.

But little more was done in the morning session than adjusting preliminaries of organization.

At the opening of the afternoon session the chairman of the Business Committee, Reverend Mr. Archibald Kenyon, presented a series of propositions and Resolutions, which were discussed during the session by Mr. Montelia of Freeport; Archibald Kenyon, Pope, and King of Joliet; ewett of Ottawa; Bridges, Eddy, J.B. Merwin, Lathrop, Waughop, Bond, Bawen, Moulding, and Skoat of Chicago; Earle of Dwight and Wilkins of Bloomington; when the whole matter was referred back to the Committee, with instructions to report in full tomorrow morning, and the Convention adjourned to meet at 7 O'Clock
