Perhaps the reason for 2500 W. Farwell Avenue's distinctiveness is the fact that its first owner, Fred Winter, was also the Architect. In the 1920's Dahl/Steadman Construction employed Winter as an architect and contractor. Longtime residents of West Ridge probably know about at least one of his designs--2246 W. Greenleaf Avenue. That home, a massive bungalow, sometimes referred to as "The Fortress," shares both of the distinctive characteristics noted above (although the garage at the Greenleaf house has been altered).
The two houses have much in common including placement of the garage in the basement, and the extensive use of concrete as both decorative and structural elements. The extraordinary house at 2246 W. Greenleaf Avenue is on a scale few other bungalows in Chicago can match.
