The building was originally the East Side Schoolhouse. It was renamed, the Grand Avenue Schoolhouse, then the Rogers Park School, and finally the Eugene Field Elementary School in 1899. It was named for Eugene Field, Sr. (1850-1895): an American journalist and famous columnist for the Chicago Morning News.
