Graduated from Union College of Law in 1867, and was made a judge of the County Court of DuPage County in 1882. He served two terms as a DuPage County judge from 1882 to 1890.

Elbert H. Gary was a co-founder and became the first Chairman of the Board of United States Steel Corporation, the world's first billion dollar corporation.

The city of Gary, Indiana, a steel town, was named for him when it was founded in 1906.

He donated the Gary Memorial Methodist Epioscopal church to Wheaton.

Daughters: Mrs. Robert W. Campbell and Mrs. Gertrude Sutcliffe.
