This crowded stretch of I-94 was named for Daniel B. Ryan, Jr., president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 1954 to 1961. Ryan (1894-1961) a graduate of De Lasalle Institute and Kent College of Law, was a successful insurance broker and son of another powerful county board member, Dan Ryan Sr. When the elder Ryan died in 1923, his son assumed his seat on the Board. The Dan Ryan Expressway is one of the busiest roads in the world.

The Dan Ryan Expressway is a freeway in the city of Chicago that runs from the Circle Interchange with I-290 near downtown Chicago through the South Side of the city. It is designated as both Interstate 94 and Interstate 90 south to 66th Street, a distance of 7.44 miles. It then becomes just I-94 at the split with the Chicago Skyway (which leads to I-90), with a remaining distance of 4.03 miles. This is a total distance of 11.47 miles. The freeway was named for Dan Ryan, Jr., a former president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners.
