Originally named 40th Avenue, the street was named for Peter Crawford an obscure Scottish pioneer and real estate speculator. He purchased 160 acres and founded the settlement of Crawford, Illinois, which grew to become North Lawndale. In the 1840s he was a Chicago area Lumber Dealer.
