Crawford, Illinois

According to the book Chicago's Little Village: Lawndale-Crawford, Peter Crawford (1796-1876) came to Chicago from New York in 1844 and bought 160 acres bound by Crawford Avenue (now Pulaski Road), Kostner Avenue, 22nd Street, and 26th Street.

Lawndale was a separate area that was annexed into the City of Chicago in 1869 from Cicero Township. The original boundaries for Lawndale were 26th Street, 22nd Street, Hamlin Avenue, and Homan Avenue. The combined area was known as the Lawndale-Crawford Community. In the 1950s, that area began being to referred to as South Lawndale and North Lawndale.

Historically, Crawford, Illinois was a suburb of Chicago until the area was annexed into the city in 1889.
