Cook county was created on Saturday, January 15, 1831, from Putnam County, Illinois and named for Daniel Pope Cook (1794-1831), nephew of Nathaniel Pope, for whom Pope County, Illinois is named. Cook was a delegate to Congress from the Illinois Territory from 1816 to 1818 and U.S. Representative from the state of Illinois 1819 to 1827.
