Franklin Parmelee, established the city’s first omnibus line, the Chicago Omnibus Line along with his three partners, David A. Gage, Liberty Bigelow, and Martin S. Johnson. In 1858, Johnson retired, distributing his share in the firm to the remaining three partners.

In 1854 the Chicago Omnibus Line established a Madison Street omnibus line, which ran west from downtown Chicago to Bull's Head or present-day Union Park. A four-horse omnibus line was added in 1855 which extended the line to Cottage Grove, by way of State Street to Roosevelt Road, then the outskirts of the city. In 1856 an additional line was instituted along Clark Street.
