The catalpa is a tree. The Edgewater developer and subdivider John Lewis Cochran named this street after Catalpa Street in his hometown of Philadelphia. (The Philadelphia Public Library has not been able to verify that there ever was a Catalpa in Philadelphia.)
Catalpa Avenue was originally named Claremont Avenue.
