Birchwood District Soundex Code B623

The northeastern portion of Rogers Park that runs along Lake Michigan north of Touhy Avenue is known as the Birchwood District. It is also known as Birchwood Beach.

This area had its own local government.

It was a sandbank filled with birch and oak trees and no paved streets. Birchwood was primarily made up of farms with a few houses. Since it had not been drained, rising and falling Lake Michigan waters caused the district to be swampy during much of the year. Still, it was an attractive wooded district.
