Amos G. Throop (1811-1894) was a Lumber Dealer and an Alderman from 4th Ward from 1849 to 1858 and from 1876 to 1880. He was active in the "Friends of Temperance in Illinois Society" and sought as he once wrote, to free the state "from the blighting curse entailed upon so many of our race by the unholy and demoralizing traffic in alcoholic drinks."
Amos Throop ran as a candidate from the Temperance Party for Mayor of Chicago against Walter S. Gurnee for the 1852-1853 Mayoral term of office. He lost. Gurnee had 1,749 votes while Throop had only 1,142.
Throop Street was named for Amos G. Throop.
