In Chicago's earliest days, Ainslie was a small community in the area near Lake Michigan through which this street runs. The street was named for a real estate subdivider of of that name. In 1848, after his death, his widow, Mary Ainslie, married an alderman, John S.C. Hogan. The newlyweds soon left Chicago for California to pan for gold.
