6533 N. Glenwood Avenue, The Sheila Tobin Garden.

This garden was included in the 2002 Fall House Tour Booklet.

The gardens near and around Sheila Tobin's house look wonderful due to her constant care.

As she sees them, there are five gardens--first, a very full sun garden at the southeast corner of Loyola Avenue and Glenwood Avenue. Sheila has been putting up stones and markers, and planting perennials there since 1994. The Malva moschata (a large hibiscus-line flower) is the star, along with mums, sedum, and Russian sage.

The second garden is an ever-changing round of seasonal flowers at the front of the house with bulbs, perennials, and annuals. There is usually a changing array in the parkway area and on the porch, with tropical plants, annuals, and hanging baskets.

The third garden on the right side of the house hs a cheerful profusion of color and greenery, from the impatiens, germaniums, and a variety of hosta. An ivy-covered wall and a fountain are also there.

The walkway continues to the fourth garden, which is on and around the back patio. It displays astilbes, rhododendrons, other perennials, wine tubs of annuals, tropical trees and bakery racks of plants.

The fifth garden is the large back yard that is a woodland glen and bird sanctuary. Trees, violets, lily of the valley and May apples fill the area with a dappled cool shade punctuated by the movements and songs of birds. At the rear, near the garage, is a sun area with a Concord grape arbor, clematis, and monarda (bee balm).

Sheila says that it is nice to sit on the wooden swing on the front porch and see hanging baskets, the birds, and the changing foliage of the season.
