Building Description
Completed in 1928, this Art Deco Skyscraper was designed by Chicago Architects Holabird and Root and designated a Chicago Landmark on Thursday, February 6,1997. As one of four historic 1920’s era buildings surrounding the Michigan Avenue Bridge at the Chicago River, the 333 N. Michigan Avenue Building is part of the Michigan-Wacker Historic District, a United States Registered Historic District (Others include the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower and Crain’s Communication Building).
The Building is located at the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, one of the most highly prized intersections in the city. It also activates a vital connection, linking the Magnificent Mile to Millennium Park. Measuring 395 feet high with 35 stories, the building is truly Art Deco both in form and materials. This is made evident by the dramatic upper level setbacks, embellished polished granite base, ornamental bands and reliefs depicting frontiersman and Native Americans at Fort Dearborn, which partially occupied the site.
The extensive building renovations proposed by Wirtz Realty Corporation will offer up to 44,000 rentable square feet of divisible retail space. The unique opportunity to aggregate approximately 25,000 rentable square feet of current, contiguous retail space will provide occupants and visitors with enhanced views overlooking Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River from the first three floors. An additional 17,000 rentable square feet of space is planned to become available on the lower mezzanine levels.
