1428 W. Estes Avenue, the Graudins Garden.

This site was included in the 1989 Annual Fall House Tour.

Ilmars and Helen Graudins have lived in their house since 1959. They seriously started working on their garden in 1973, and together, have enhanced it each year.

They have planted many trees throughout the property.

In the front, side, and back yards you will find various greenery, including:

Perennials: astilbe, black-eyed Susan, chrysanthemum columbine, daylily, diantheus, evening primrose, ferus, hibiscus - large flowers (deep red, pink, and white), hybrid lilies, iris, jack-in-the-pulpit, lavender, pachysandra, peonies, prim-rose, stoxefia, Thorndale ivy, and wood geranium.

Annuals: begonias, germaniums, impatiens, and petunias.

Ornamentation: azalea, basil nut, blooming almod, Japanese maple, jasmine, lilac, rhododendrums, star magnolias, and trumpet vine.

Trees: beech, birch, black walnut, linden, locust, mountain ash, red bud, and spruce.

Berries: goose berries, raspberries, red currents, and horse chestnuts.

They plant about a bushel of tulips and daffodils every fall for spring blooming.

Ilmars and Helen have been honored by the Mayor's Office for their beautiful garden and in 1988, they won a Rogers Park Community Council award for their efforts.
