Bena Shklyanoy, her husband and two young daughters arrived in Chicago in 1976 thinking surely they had moved to another planet. The family's life in America began in Rogers Park, moved to West Ridge and then to Skokie, following a common path for those in Chicago’s Russian Jewish community who left the Soviet Union in the 1970's and 1980's.
