From the earliest days of settlement along the Ridge to today, taverns, corner bars and neighborhood pubs have been important gathering places for Rogers Park and West Ridge residents and visitors. Discover some of our community’s historic bars and nightlife venues on a mile-long walk along Devon, Clark and Glenwood Avenues. Learn how battles over prohibition, dancing and movies shaped local bar culture as well as created the very boundaries of our neighborhood. Along the way, perhaps you’ll find a new place to wet your whistle or see an old favorite through new eyes, led by tour guide Stephanie Barto.
Participants must be 21 or older. The tour includes stops for a drink at a couple of places, so please bring a photo ID. The cost of drinks is not included in the ticket price, so bring cash or credit cards if you plan to try a beverage or two along the way.
Stephanie Barto, a long-time resident of Rogers Park, is well-known to those who drop in or call the RPWRHS office, where she serves as office administrator. She’s also a researcher of neighborhood history, and an all-around fun person to be around, giving her a unique understanding of local nightlife she will share on the tour.
Tour price is $20 per person, $15 with RPWRHS Member Discount. Cost of drinks not included.
