A Culinary Tour of Devon Avenue in West Ridge (and more!)

On Saturday, July 22, food historian Colleen Sen will conduct a tour of Chicago’s International marketplace—Devon Avenue. Highlights of the tour include a new Afghan bakery, a sweet shop, several multiethnic grocery stores, a sari shop, a jewelry store, and much more. Colleen will also point out some interesting architectural features of the street, thanks to recent research done by the Art Deco Society of Chicago.  

The group will meet at 9.00 at the parking lot of Devon Bank (6455 N. Western Ave) where you can park your cars. Lunch will be served at Hyderabadi Kitchen (6242 N. California Ave) at approximately 12.30. 

Pre-registration is mandatory ($40 for nonmembers, $35 for RPWRHS members) and includes lunch. Attendance is strictly limited to twenty people.  

Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring large shopping bags. 

West Ridge resident Dr. Colleen Taylor Sen is the author of eight books, including Food Culture in India; Curry: A Global History; Turmeric: The Wonder Spice; A Guide to Indian Restaurant Menus; and Feasts and Fasts: A History of Indian Food. Her books have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
