Applicants for the Board should be aware that the Board of the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society is a working board.  Directors are expected to be active in fulfilling the mission of the Historical Society to collect, preserve, and share the history of the two neighborhoods served by the Society.

Expectations for Directors are as follows.

  1. Attendance
    • Board members are expected to attend all regular meetings of the Board.  By-Laws require at least one meeting per calendar quarter. Currently, meetings are held monthly on the fourth Monday of each month at our office at 7363 N. Greenview from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, but a new schedule can be agreed upon by each newly-elected Board at the beginning of the new term.
    • A Board member who is frequently or consistently absent from meetings should resign from the Board, perhaps offering to serve in another capacity when possible.
    • A Board member may also be terminated by a vote of 2/3 of the other Board members.
    • Board members are expected to announce any conflict of interest to other Board members and refrain from voting on any matter involving a conflict of interest.
  2. Term of Service
    • Board members are expected to serve at least one term of 2 years beginning with election by members attending the Annual Meeting which is held during the first quarter of the calendar year, typically on a Saturday in March of each year.
    • Board members are limited to 6 years of continuous service (3 terms), but they can continue on the Board until a successor is elected.
  3. Duties: Board members are asked to commit themselves to one or two of the following functions of the society
    • Governance and Strategic Planning
    • Board Recruitment and Development
    • Fundraising and Sponsorship
    • Finance and Accounting
    • Outreach and Community Relations
    • Public Relations
    • Website Content Development
    • Social Media Marketing
    • Membership and Volunteer Management
    • Program and Event Planning
    • Collection Management and Research
    • Technology
  4. Board members are expected to make an annual monetary donation to the Historical Society.
  5. There is no compensation for serving on the Board except for reimbursement of expenses as provided by policy.
