Join us for an evening with Luann Hamilton, Active Transportation Alliance Board President, as she covers the history of our streets in Chicago over time.  Ms. Hamilton will take us on this journey in transportation from shared use in the early part of the 20th century to auto-oriented use and highlight the current ongoing transformation to a Safe Streets for All policy (e.g., protected bike lanes, greenways with contra-flow bike lanes on 1/4 mile streets, bump outs and pedestrian refuge islands on arterials).

Ms. Hamilton will also give an update on current laws regarding bicycle and pedestrian use in Illinois, which many may not be aware of. In the case of people walking, many motorists may not be aware that state law requires that drivers stop for pedestrians crossing at intersections whether or not there are marked crosswalks. Regarding people on bikes, motorists sometimes blame cyclists for breaking laws that don’t even exist, while not realizing that high risk motorist behavior, such as distracted driving and failure to yield are among the leading causes of bicycle traffic crashes.
