In the late 1800s and early 1900s, West Ridge was primarily farmland where farmers made a modest living growing vegetables for the markets in Chicago. Given the proximity to local cemeteries and the tradition of decorating the graves, the West Ridge farmers found that growing and selling flowers was much more lucrative than growing and selling vegetables; and unlike vegetables, flowers could even be grown all year long in a steam-heated greenhouse! This led to the rapid growth of greenhouses in West Ridge.
Join us for an evening with Dona Vitale as she details the transformation, growth and decline of greenhouses in West Ridge.
