Welcome to the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society's HistoryWiki!

Consult the User's Guide for information on using the wiki software.

We encourage you to read the Getting Started section below. Every Wiki is slightly different due to the different topics being covered. If you feel you know how to use it without the information below, we recommend your first search be on the word "INDEX". You may find that this helps you locate the information you're seeking faster. Regardless, thanks for visiting our HistoryWiki.

This is a READ ONLY Wikipedia. Changes are only allowed to be made by SysOps.

Where photos are indicated, these numbers are for reference only. No photos are, at this time, viewable on this Wiki. You may view these photos at the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society, 7363 N. Greenview Avenue, Check our website for times. Copies may be ordered at that time.

Getting started

This is how to use the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society’s HistoryWiki.

You will be able to fully search this database of historical information by word or collection of words (e.g., “Touhy,” or “Philip McGregor Rogers,” etc.). Also, you may search a person's name by last name first or by first name first (Rogers, Philip MacGregor) or (Philip MacGregor Rogers). We want to make it easy for you to find whatever you're looking for. Only SysOps are allowed to make changes, or to fix existing information.

If you're familiar with Wikipedia, to search a word or term, just enter it in the search box to the left. Then click Go. If you're not, please read on.

History is constantly changing. New things are always being discovered, and old ideas are falling by the wayside in the face of newer information. By being electronic, it’s literally always up-to-date.

This site uses open-source MediaWiki software, the same software used by Wikipedia itself. Because we've been hacked so many times, you no longer can add new information to this Wikipedia, whether in the form of a new entry or by updating an existing entry. We encourage you if you find an error or wish to add information to do so by making us aware of the situation. We'll repair the erroneous information. Every visitor to this site has unique knowledge that the rest of us don’t. Your contribution of this information benefits us all.

We want to maintain the integrity of the information that you will find here. Which is why we request that you inform us of any additions and/or changes. It should be obvious that you should be able to substantiate any information that you add or correct. Please include sources where applicable. In order to make changes or additions, simply send the information to us at editor@rpwrhs.org and we'll put it in for you.

There are already 48,787 entries in this HistoryWiki (as of 12:50 p.m., Tuesday, 8/9/2016)

If you see a word in RED, this means that there is no information about this topic and we would appreciate having this word or term enhanced on our Wiki. Only SysOps can make changes. So, please let us know so we can add it to the Wiki.

If the word is in BLUE, then there is additional information waiting for you. (Think of it as a super footnote). By clicking on the word, you will be transported to information. When you’re finished, just click the RETURN or BACK button on your browser to return to the page you were reading.

The Society’s officers hope you will find this a useful tool in your research. Every item you inform us is missing that gets added adds benefits us all. Every item you correct enhances the value of our HistoryWiki. Help us to make this the "last word" about the history of Rogers Park and West Ridge.

Searching: You must spell out the entire word. "Avenue" not "Ave." Use punctuation correctly. Look for the full name "Welcome Inn Pizzeria" not "Welcome Inn". "Philip McGregor Rogers" not "Philip Rogers." If you're not sure, go to collective listings, such as "Restaurant", "Drug Store" or "Pharmacy", etc. The search engine Wikipedia uses is very literal and won't give good results if you don't do these things. Also, the search engine is case sensitive, that means if it was supposed to be capitalized, capitalize your search term; "Philip" not "philip". All Wikipedia-style file names are always capitalized.

If you do not find a term that you're seeking, please check Wikipedia to see if it already exists there. In assembling our HistoryWiki, many of the terms we might have included already exist on Wikipedia and didn't need to be duplicated here. So we just made a "link" to the Wikipedia page or Internet website where the information can be found.

For your first search please try "INDEX".

AGAIN--Remember, ONLY System Operators are authorized to make changes or add information to the Wiki. So, let us know what you have so we can add or fix the information.
