First Neighborhood Gangsta’ Walk

Capone era mobster and Capone antagonist, Jack Zuta, lived in West Ridge.

rom the roaring 20s onward, West Ridge was home to some of the city’s most notorious crime figures, drawn by the spacious homes and peaceful environment. This was the stomping ground of North Side crime boss George “Bugs” Moran, Al Capone’s main rival for control of the illegal booze trade and rackets.

Join us for the tour on Sunday, October 10, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Those attending will see the outsides of the homes of Big Tim Murphy (gunned down in front of his house on Morse Avenue), mob enforcer Jack Zuta, Joey Aiello, known as the toughest gangster in Chicago, and many others.

RPWRHS docents will provide a detail commentary on their careers and residencies and the surrounding neighborhood.

Reservations are $24 for RPWRHW members, $30 for non-members. Reserve your tickets online until October 3, or call 773-764-4078.

The Trains That Ran Through Rogers Park

Come with us and visit:
The Trains That Ran Through Rogers Park

R

ogers Parkers have had an inordinately great number of rail-based transportation modes available since before its founding. During that time, horse-drawn vehicles (horsecars), electric streetcars, steam- and electric-powered rapid transit (think the “L”), steam- and diesel-powered commuter services, and steam- and diesel-powered interstate passenger services have conveyed people to and from Rogers Park, both on the ground (at grade) and upon elevated structures.

CTA 4290Out in Union, IL, the Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) has over 60 rail cars and locomotives that either actually ran in Rogers Park or are representative of others that did. No collection of such equipment can ever be complete. Many pieces were scrapped along the way, with no examples saved. However, the IRM has the largest collection extant. And, we’re planning to go there to visit these cars on Sunday, August 8, 2010. You can register for the event here.

2442 Morsehe Society's annual house walk, this year located in the Indian Boundary Park neighborhood, provided a number of firsts and marked continued success for the popular, annual event.

This year’s tour was held on Sunday, May 2. The event highlighted Indian Boundary Park and surrounding homes, including the historic Park Castles and Park Gables co-ops. Over 160 patrons took part in the tours, which began at noon and continued until 5:00pm.

Indian Boundary Park opened in 1922 as the centerpiece of the Ridge Avenue Park District. The 13-acre park was designed as a pastoral landscape with picturesque gardens, a lagoon with a small island, rolling lawns, and meandering paths.
