n a cool but sunny Sunday, October 4, 2009, we conducted our annual Founders' Day event. Each year we conduct an event to honor those who founded our Society. This year, we conducted a tour of the Calvary Cemetery in nearby Evanston.
Because the cemetery is so large, a bus that looks like an old-time trolley was used to take the visitors around. We divided the cemetery into four different groupings and had guides located at each to give the visitors the detailed tour of that part of the cemetery.
Attendees were given a booklet detailing each of the sites being shown. There were Chicago Mayors, politicians, a poet, some sports figures, like Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox, and many others. Where possible/practical, we were able to include a photograph of the person. Founders of Rogers Park, such as PhilipMcDonald Rogers and Patrick Leonard Touhy, their spouses and other members of their families are buried at Calvary Cemetery. This booklet was the first of its kind to detail various graves of interest. We have extra copies and they can be ordered from the Society's office for $8 a copy for non-members and $6.40 for members.
