A Fond Farewell to our Original Website

A
s we launch the second generation of the society’s web site, it’s fitting to take a look at where we’ve been. The Rogers Park / West Ridge Historical Society has had a presence on the internet for over ten years. In the 1990s, Society founder Mary Jo Doyle, who served as executive director of the Society until her passing in 2008, saw the benefits of reaching out to the public using what was then a relatively new technology.

The Original Website DesignMary Jo teamed up with member and volunteer John Hagstrand to create a presence for the Society on the internet. John hosted the site for us from the mid-90s until 2009, as well as worked with Mary Jo on the site’s design and content. The design that they arrived at together has served us well for the last ten years, with the site being maintained for much of that time by member Roy Alexander, who also manages a number of web sites of his own.

Following Mary Jo’s vision of providing information to members and the public and keeping pace with new features, like on-line shopping and advanced graphics capabilities, we’ve outgrown the original design. But in our new design, we’ve maintained the basic color scheme and much of the structure of the original, while bringing the site’s capabilities into the 21st century.
